Candlebearers

From Pressure Wiki

This page is for the regular Candlebearers. For the larger variant, see Candlebrutes.

Z-566, codenamed "Candlebearers," are monsters in Pressure. They are the main threats that players encounter while in the lower crypt within The Raveyard and roaming the Hadal Blacksite.

Appearance

Candlebearers appear as huge, humanoid stone statues that decorate The Raveyard. Each of them has a lantern-shaped head with a lit candle inside, which extinguishes once they become active. They have a distinct crack on their outer shell, running from the top of their torso to their left arm and leg. Each limb consists of three segmented pieces, and is relatively much longer compared to its torso.

Candlebearers also appear in dark rooms within the Hadal Blacksite, including side rooms.

Mechanics

Light sources that are shined onto Candlebearers force them to freeze in place. If no light source is present, the Candlebearers move towards the player until it reaches them, slamming them and dealing 25 damage.

Candlebearers become enraged if a light source is shined on them for 3 seconds. This causes a blue flame to appear on their candle. They also become much more aggressive, chasing the player at a much higher speed and becoming invulnerable to any light source for a period of time.

The Raveyard

For more information, see: The Raveyard

In The Raveyard, the Candlebearers appear all around in an inanimate state. They become active once the player has fallen to the lower levels of the crypt. After entering room 28, they start chasing and attacking the player until they reach the end of the lower crypt at room 41. At this point, they are not able to pass the blue light that illuminates the area leading outside.

When a player in the lower crypt enters a room with a Candlebearer, it breaks out of its idle state and becomes active. Despite what the document for Candlebearers says, dropping the Gravelight in The Raveyard does not stop the Candlebearers from pursuing players.

The Hadal Blacksite

For more information, see: The Hadal Blacksite

In the Hadal Blacksite, Candlebearers will not pursue players who do not have a light source. If a player drops all of their light sources, Candlebearers will no longer follow them. Once the player picks up their light source again, Candlebearers will continue moving towards them. If a player has light sources, but they are all out of batteries, this will not stop the Candlebearer from pursuing them.

Candlebearers will not enter rooms containing light, but will follow players into other rooms if they are dark. If all players enter rooms with light, Candlebearers will lose interest and return back to the place they originated. If players re-enter the dark area, Candlebearers will pursue them again. If Emergency Lights turn on in a room (which refers to the red lights that appear after being in a dark room for long enough), any Candlebearers present will freeze and be unable to move.

Strategy

When passing by Candlebearers, It is not advised to have a light source on for too long as they could enrage a Candlebearer. It's best to use the light source sporadically to stop it from moving for moments at a time.

Candlebearers move slower than the player, meaning one can simply walk past them without getting hurt. However, when enraged, a Candlebearer is much faster than the player. It is still possible to dodge its attacks, but movement is imperative.

In The Raveyard, Players should conserve using their light sources once they reach the lower levels of the crypt, only turning it on when either the path ahead is not visible, or when a Candlebearer is nearby.

In The Hadal Blacksite, Players should consider dropping all of their light sources in an emergency. This will stop Candlebearers from pursuing. If a player picks up a light source again, the Candlebearers will continue to chase them, so it's best to have a plan of escape once a player picks up their light source after dropping it.

Notes

  • Candlebearers can follow players into cargo rooms containing a Candlebrute, making it so players have to evade both monsters.
  • The Splorglight and Blacklight do not affect Candlebearers and will not freeze them, due to their unique property of not having effects on any entities, such as not irritating Squiddles. This behavior matches with how they affect Candlebrutes as well.
  • Candlebearers can spawn in most rooms within the Hadal Blacksite, including side rooms. If a Candlebearer spawns in a side room, it will make the sound it makes when a player enters a room and activates it, but it will not begin moving until a player opens the side room.
  • In The Hadal Blacksite, if a player drops all light sources they have, it will prevent the Candlebearers from pursuing them. This behavior does not apply to The Raveyard version of the Candlebearers.
  • Candlebearers can swim.
  • If the Emergency Lights turn on, the Candlebearers will not be able to move or attack the player.

Lore

For more information, see: The Lore of Pressure

The Candlebearers were placed at the graveyard where the Raveyard event takes place since its founding in the 1800's. Each of the statues deteriorate at the same pace in the same locations on their body. The surface of Candlebearers hardens when exposed to light, ceasing their movement, as light burns their interior blood veins. Each Candlebearer also has a non-functional heart, which is unique to each instance. Candlebearers are exclusively hostile to those with working light sources, as they ignore damaged sources and those out of battery. If kept still for too long by a hand-held light, Candlebearers become extremely hostile and begin to glow blue.

Trivia

  • A group of Candlebearers as well as Candlebrutes is presumably called a flock, as is mentioned in the document for the latter.
