Searchlights
SPOILER WARNING
This page may contain spoilers for the ending of Pressure. Please be advised.
Vultus Luminaria, dubbed "Searchlights" are large monsters in Pressure acting as one of the Grand Encounters in the Hadal Blacksite.
Appearance
Searchlights are large creatures that resemble whales. On its back, it has a heavily armored shell with a spike cluster towards the rear. Underneath its shell, it has four large, glowing eyes that emit beams of orange light, along with a large, gaping mouth containing multiple rows of teeth in the center. Around its mouth are smaller circular mouths with large hooks hanging out of them, three on the right and three on the left of the center mouth. On its rear, the Searchlight has two fins and a tail for stabilization.
Mechanics
The Searchlights can appear as a Grand Encounter between rooms 60 to 80 and after The Ridge. In both encounters, the Searchlights themselves work the same. They will move along a path, waving their spotlights around the floor. If a player steps in one for too long, the Searchlight will make a distinct warning sound, indicating that it sees them. If they fail to move out of sight in time, they will be harpooned, and instantly killed.
In the Endless Expedition, they will appear after around 100 rooms. (E.g. 95, 180, 290, etc.)
Grand Encounter
The first Grand Encounter can happen at any room between 60 and 80. In the Searchlights encounter, the players must activate a certain number of generators (This can change with how many players are in the game which results more difficulty.) while avoiding the Searchlight in the area. To activate a generator, a player must go up to a generator that is glowing red.
When they interact with it, the wrench icon in the middle will begin to fill up slowly. If the player stops an arrow when it passes into a highlighted area, the wrench will fill up substantially. If they stop it anywhere else, they will be kicked out of the generator and take 5 damage. Once enough generators are repaired, the door leading to the next room will open.
Ending Encounter
The final Grand Encounter takes place after The Ridge, and has the players repairing multiple cables on the ocean floor in order to get the External Repellent System back online. Trenchbleeder Lucy will illuminate the area in order for the players to swim without fear of the parasites. Like the first encounter, the amount of cables depends on the amount of players. When the players first arrive, there will only be one Searchlight. When 1/3 of the cables are done, a second searchlight will spawn, with a third spawning when 2/3 of the cables are done.
When all the cables are completed, Lucy will sound her horn, signaling the players to swim into the hole in the middle of the area. Once a player pulls the lever located at the bottom, the External Repellent System will be back online, and the players must swim back through the cave they came from and dodge one last Searchlight. Once they make it back to the facility, Lucy will step on a Searchlight, and the airlock will open.
Strategy
- Throughout both encounters, there will be plenty of hiding spots for players to use. A Searchlight will not kill a player if there is something between it and the player.
- It's recommended to go slow and repair generators after a Searchlight passes.
- There is no animation when repairing cables like there is repairing generators. Use this to your advantage.
- When you are in the first Searchlight encounter, make sure to only finish a generator when you are sure the Searchlight will not spot you, as you cannot crouch when you are in the finishing animation.
- In the first Searchlight encounter, the generators will take longer to complete, whilst the cables in the Final encounter can be completed faster.
- In the final encounter, go for exposed cables on the surface, then get any that are possibly underground after the 3rd Searchlight has appeared. If none are underground, try finding them on the surface.
Lore
Whilst investigating the animal species living in the Let-Vand Zone, Urbanshade discovered the Vultus Luminaria. Colloquially referred to as "Searchlights", this organism is a whale-sized creature with four eyes that emit glowing, orange beams of light. When prey is spotted, an appendage similar in appearance to a "harpoon" is hooked onto the prey before pulling it into the creature's mouth. The Searchlights are the natural predator of Bottomfeeders. If a Searchlight sees a Bottomfeeder, it will attempt to hook onto it and consume it.
During the Blacksite Lockdown, a wild Searchlight managed to make its way into the Lunar-Grav testing chamber after the bulkhead separating it from the sea was left opened by The Saboteur. The player then later discovers this Searchlight and watches it consume an Urbanshade guardsman. After the crystal is retrieved, multiple Searchlights were drawn to a location near the External Repellent System cannons after confusing the Trenchbleeder Lucy's beam of light for a Searchlight that had found food. This then leads to the player encountering them when tasked with repairing cables in the area.

Trivia
- The Searchlights species has been around for 80 million years.[1]
- Searchlights do not have a Z-classification because they are considered wild animals.[1]
- There are an estimated 350 Searchlights in the Let-Vand Zone.[1]
- Getting hit by the harpoon does do 30 damage, but it's ignorable, as the player would be dead a few seconds later.
- The Searchlight species name was originally "Vultus Limunaria" in it's document which meant "lemon face" due to a typing mistake, instead of "Vultus Luminaria" which meant "Face Lights". However, this has been fixed.
- Dying to Searchlights will not show your corpse.
- With low graphics you can see the items floating where you died.
