Grand Encounters are large-scale encounters in Pressure, happening at set intervals and requiring the player to complete a set of tasks before proceeding.

Overview

During a run, the player will face two Grand Encounters, plus the Ending Encounter. Currently, only one Grand Encounter and Ending Encounter are available. The first Grand Encounter occurs randomly between rooms 56 and 80, after encountering Sebastian Solace. The Ending Encounter begins right after the end of The Ridge.

The Ending Encounter is scripted and will feature one Grand Encounter enemy. After completing the Ending Encounter, the player will mostly be safe from all monsters, and the run will complete once they leave the Hadal Blacksite. However, the player can potentially walk into a closet containing the Puddles of Void-Mass, which can kill them either before or after the Grand Encounter.

Grand Encounters

Below are descriptions of all of the Grand Encounters currently in Pressure.

Searchlights

For more information, see: Searchlights

During the Searchlights Grand Encounter, the player is tasked with repairing a set number of generators in an open area while avoiding being spotted by the Searchlights. The amount of generators required changes depending on how many players are alive in the run, starting at 5 and increasing up to a maximum of 15.

  • 1 = 5 generators
  • 2-4 = 9 generators
  • 5-8 = 15 generators

Each generator repaired will cause the Searchlights to increase in speed. Players can hide in various unique hiding spots to avoid Searchlights, including lockers.

Each generator is repaired through a short quick-time event requiring the player to click in time with the cursor overlapping a highlighted area. Clicking while the cursor is not overlapping the highlighted area will result in the player being shocked for 5 damage and cancelling the minigame. The progress towards repair still occurs if the user does not input any clicks while in the minigame, however the progress is very slow.

For more information, see: Puzzles

Before the Grand Encounter, there are two rooms with generators that must be repaired before entering, accompanied by a radio message from HQ regarding the situation.

Mechanics and Strategy

During the first two rooms after HQ announces the detour over the intercom, Wall Dwellers are still able to spawn and attack the player. During the quick-time event, the player might be attacked and instantly killed if they are not fast enough in the event or to exit out of it. If there is more than one player in the run, a player can stand in the doorway leading to the rooms, preventing any attacks from Wall Dwellers as they can not follow you into the main encounter room.

The Searchlights Grand Encounter teleports all players in the run to a forced cutscene when one player gets close enough to the containment door, spawning all players in one position at the beginning of the encounter. It is a well advised strategy to back away from the main room and back into the starting room in case one of the spotlights passes through the spawn point.

There are four spotlights emanating from Searchlights moving around the floor in random directions searching for players. The player is able to hide in either a locker, underneath the scattered debris and raised forklifts, or simply dodge the spotlights entirely with good movement.

A common strategy to complete this encounter is to trail behind Searchlights, following them around the room to repair broken generators. Sebastian endorses this strategy if the player dies to Searchlights, claiming that Searchlights "can't exactly do a 180."

If the player happens to brush against or step into one of the spotlights, an audible siren-like sound cue will play, alerting the player that they have entered Searchlights' detection area. The player has around three seconds after the sound cue plays before Searchlights instantly kills them, so it is best to keep a mental note of where Searchlights is at all times.

Ending Encounter

Searchlights

During the Ending Encounter, the player is tasked with fixing a set number of cables in the Let-Vand Zone. The number of cables depends on how many players are in the game, starting at 7 and capping at 20.

  • 1 = 7 cables
  • 2-5 = 14 cables
  • 6-8 = 20 cables

Searchlights will also be roaming the area, increasing from 1 up to 3 as more cables get fixed. Additionally, Searchlights in the area will increase in speed as more repairs are completed. Every time a Searchlight is added, the music will skip to a specific timestamp.

Each cable is fixed through a short quick-time event requiring the player to click in time with the cursor overlapping a highlighted area. The cable repair minigame is quicker than the generator repair minigame, requiring about three successful clicks to finish. Clicking while the cursor is not overlapping the highlighted area will result in the player being shocked for 5 damage and cancelling the minigame.

Once all cables have been fixed, the player will have to flip a switch marked by an upwards-facing spotlight, and then return through the cave they entered the area from, also marked by an upwards-facing spotlight. While returning through the cave, a Searchlight will perform one final attempt of capturing the player, keeping position over an opening in the roof of the cave and moving its lights periodically. After traversing safely, the Searchlight will momentarily try to reach the player before being stomped on by Lucy, which somehow moved without commands.

Once returned, the player will have to follow a marked path directly to the right of the stairs to arrive at a nearby dock, where a submarine will surface to get the player out of the Blacksite. Interacting with the button inside the submarine next to its entrance will cue it to close, ending the run.

Mechanics and Strategy

The final Searchlights encounter is very similar to the mid-game Searchlights Grand Encounter. Instead of repairing broken generators, the player is now repairing broken cables.

It is important to note that the cables in this section repair faster than the broken generators, so you are able to use that to your advantage when repairing. However, be wary of the increasing amount of Searchlights that spawn when more cables get repaired.

Depending on the amount of players in the run, a player can wait by the middle of the arena, ready to activate the cannon after all cables are repaired. Another player can also wait by the entrance cave where the players arrived at the arena, teleporting all players in the run to the final cave sequence when the cannon is activated.

The final cave sequence requires the player to swim past four randomly moving spotlights from a Searchlights in close quarters. If needed, utilize the debris and environment to hide from the spotlight, moving around the light to the end of the cave. If one player reaches the end of the cave sequence, all players will be teleported to the end as well.

It is impossible to be stomped on by Lucy as there are invisible walls blocking the player in that direction during the animation.
